What is the IELTS Band Score?
First things first… if you haven’t already, you need to get to know the IELTS band score system.

For example, a band score of 9 indicates expert proficiency – this level is normally native, or native-like level, but let me tell you a secret – not all natives will get a band score of 9 – they will often only get 7.5 and above! Contrastingly a score of 1 – 2 means that the candidate is a virtual non-user and has a very low level of competence. So the range covers ALL levels of English.
The score, which is the score you receive after doing the IELTS test is actually an overall score which is composed from the evaluation of the four language skills tested in the exam: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Each skill is graded separately on the same band scale and so your score looks like this

Individual vs. Overall Band Scores
You’ll notice that on the test report card that there is a score for each of the individual 4 skills, so what’s the difference between individual and overall band scores?
Once you have completed the test, you will get an individual band score for each of the four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. These scores also range from 0 to 9 in the IELTS band score system and of course reflect your performance in each area.
You will also get your overall band score which, as we mentioned previously ranges from 0 to 9. The overall band score is an average of your scores across all four sections and when calculated is rounded to the nearest half band (0.5). For studying a doctorate (PhD) generally the IELTS minimum overall band score rises to 7.0, but with the same minimum of 6.0 for each skill. Some universities may accept a slightley lower overall score of 6.5 but this is less common.
